Anglo Saxon Period in English Literature

 Anglo Saxon period was known for the name of two tribes Angle and Saxon. In Britain, the Celts were used to live there. Angle, Saxon, and Jutes invaded there. There were fights and wars and Christianity was introduced. Most work was in oral form. There was a translation of literature from the Latin language to the old English language.

In Britain, the natives were Celts, and Picts were attached to Celts. Roman which used to rule over England went back. Then Angle and Saxon invaded England, pushing Celts to the western side. Hence, the Anglo-Saxon age started. 

When Romans invaded Britain. They brought Christianity with them. As the native pagans, they have no religion. 

The one who translated the bible was Alfred the Great. Aldrich also played an important role in religious aspects. The Bible and the other work were translated from Latin to Old English. The old English is much more familiar with Germanic.

Caedmeum and Cynwolf were religious poets. Bede was the first written historical religious book. 

Alfred the Great was the king of weeks, after defeating Viking he united the people of Anglo-Saxon and called them Dear English Men. He enhanced the politics. He had also an important role in the enhancement of literature and learning. 

The main aspects of literature were nature, the love for glory, the love for womanhood, and royal kings and queens. Most work was in oral form and some of the work was carved in leather or on stones. There were Chronicles which talked about histories and there were riddles. Most work was in poetic form. There was an introduction of wind and Storm in the poetry. They talked about the heroes and worriers in poetry.


The main works of that era are Beowulf, Widsith, The Fight of Finnesberry, and Complaint of Dear. In Beowulf, the poem was considered the first manuscript by an unknown writer. The main characters of Beowulf are King Hrothgar, Grendel, Grendel's Mother, and Beowulf. The main themes revolved around bravery (Beowulf), revenge (Grendels mother on the death of Grendel), and beauty of wealth (King Hrothgar)


Widsith was also the main work, which emphasized the songs for kings and queens, he wandered widely and was welcomed in many halls.


The Fight of Finnesberry was placed in Finnesberry. The fight was between King Hnaef and Finn's army were attackers. Finn's army has badly lost the fight.


The Complaint of Deor was based on Germanic mythology. It was the folklore; the stories that from generation to generation. The poem starts with the struggle and misfortune of the life of a character. The theme of the poem is that 

" The continuous flow of time erases all pains."

So, it is concluded that the literature was based on the warriors, the beauty of women, courage, and bravery, and stories of worriers, Queens, and Kings. Most work was in oral form and most of the poem had unknown artists.
