Summary and Explanation of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles

Oedipus Rex is written by Sophocles which follows the tragedy of Aristotle. there was a king and queen and they had a child named Oedipus. when they come to know about the prediction that their child would kill his father and Mary his own mother. They decided to kill Oedipus and ordered a servant to leave the child in the jungle. But the servant handed over the child to the king and queen of the other kingdom. Oedipus grew up and became a strong, courageous man. 

There he came to know about the prediction associated with him so he left that place because according to him the king and queen who adopted him were their real parents. In this way, he also participated in many wars and battles. 

While fighting in the battle, he killed a particular person and then moved toward the kingdom whose king had died and married his widow. This kingdom had a plague disease and Oedipus entered the kingdom by solving the puzzle of sphenix, sphenix is a mythical creature whose face is a lion and body an eagle.  When Oedipus solved the puzzle, the people of that kingdom considered him a hero and he married the widowed queen and became the king of that kingdom.

 After the year passed, the man came from his previous Kingdom and said his father had died. Moreover, he revealed that he was not his real father as he was adopted by them it was also revealed to him that the particular person who was killed by him in the battle was his father and he married his own mother after hearing this he scratched his eyes. Now he has to live with this guilt and this is considered the biggest tragedy of all.
